Winter Holidays in Brixental, Tyrol

Skiing in SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser – Brixental

One of the most modern and biggest ski areas, right outside the door of your chalet: SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser – Brixental encompasses over 288 km of perfectly groomed pistes and 90 lifts. And around 80 mountain huts serve as perfect venues whenever you are in the mood for a break and some well-earned refreshments. This ski area close to Kitzbühel includes the communities of Westendorf, Söll, Scheffau, Ellmau, Going, Kelchsau, Hopfgarten, Itter and Brixen im Thale. The region surrounding Westendorf is particularly popular with ambitious skiers: not least because you will find here the steepest piste in all of SkiWelt – the black-rated “112er” – as well as one of the longest slopes in SkiWelt (the No. 11 Kandler run from the Choralpe) in Westendorf. Beginners will also find an ideal “playground” right in the town center, though also out on the flatter, easier pistes on the mountain.

Incidentally: The new SkiWelt Tour gives you an opportunity to discover SkiWelt in a single circuit consisting of 37 lifts and 84 km of pistes. You can also access the circuit with the help of the Alpenrosenbahn lifts, which are close to Chalet 149 in Westendorf.

Cross-Country Skiing and Winter Hiking in Brixental

On the Brixental cross-country trail (17.9 km) and the 8.5 km long “Camping Westendorf” trail, you can enjoy healthy exercise on skis out in the fresh air. Across the length and breadth of SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser – Brixental, you are greeted by almost 150 km of trails where you can indulge your love of cross-country skiing. For winter hikers, too, this popular Tyrol holiday region offers a broad network of maintained winter hiking paths. Popular tours beginning in Westendorf lead, for example, to Windautal – a true natural jewel – as well as up Westendorf’s own local mountain, the Nachtsöllberg.

Family Holidays in Brixental: Ice Skating and Sledding in Westendorf

Needless to say, no winter holiday would be complete without a thrilling sled ride along with a snowball fight. If you choose to zoom down the No. 117 sledding hill, the Alpenrosenbahn will carry you up to Bergrestaurant Talkaser, from where your ride will ultimately bring you down to Windautal. Once you have reached the bottom, at the Schrandlhof, the shuttlebus will bring you back to Westendorf. You will find other sledding suggestions on the website of the local tourist office. Do you love the ice? In that case, in the town center of Westendorf you will be happy to know there is an ice-skating rink, while at Sportberg Gaisberg in Kirchberg you will discover a 20 m tall man-made tower of ice, perfect for fine-tuning your ice climbing skills (introductory courses are also offered on Wednesdays).

As you can see, a holiday spent in Brixental is likely to be full of memorable experiences. Not least if you choose to pay a visit to the ALPINE IGLOO Village (Hochbrixen), participate in a tour on a snowcat (Söll), or take advantage of the “Early Bird” offer to be one of the first on the slopes at 7:30 in the morning …

Your Summer Vacation in Tyrol

Hiking in the Kitzbühel Alps in Tyrol

The (gentle) mountains of the Kitzbühel Alps are an absolute joy for hikers and mountain lovers. The peaks in the Brixental region reach heights as much as 2400 m. One of them stands out in particular: the “Grosser Rettenstein” (elev. 2362 m) which, with its double summit, is one of the most striking mountains in the Tyrolean holiday region, also bordering on the Pinzgau district of Salzburger Land. Yet another highlight is the summit of the Kröndlhorn – the highest mountain in Brixental: Standing there at 2444 meters, rather than a summit cross, is a chapel.

That said, your hike does not always have to include a summit conquest. Sometimes, a snack break at a mountain hut can be every bit as rewarding for hikers, sitting there and snacking on homemade cheese and bacon, all the while taking in the amazing scenery. Yet another must-do during your holiday spent at Chalet 149 Westendorf: an excursion to 16 km long Windautal, aptly nicknamed “the pearl of Westendorf”.

Summer Lifts in Brixental

If you prefer to avoid the initial climb, one of the summer lifts will be happy to carry you farther up the mountain. The Alpenrosenbahn in Westendorf is only a three-minute walk from Chalet 149. At the mountain station between the Talkaser (1770 m) and the Choralpe (1820 m), you can look forward to unforgettable family experiences: the Himmelssteig, Spoggolino, Holzwurmweg and Adlerhorst all promise great fun for little explorers as well as hikers. From that same mountain station, you can also set out on a tour to the beloved Kreuzjöchlsee.

Other tips for families riding the summer lifts: Hexenwasser in Söll, Hohe Salve and Ellmis Zauberwelt in Ellmau. The “Bergbahn ErlebnisCard” includes use of up to 15 lifts and 7 recreational attractions as well as attractive discounts offered by numerous bonus partners in the region – for additional information and prices, please click here.

Cycling in E-Biking in Tyrol

1000 km of bicycle paths and mountain bike trails. Sound gigantic? – It is! That’s one reason so many TOP biking events are hosted in Brixental. Genussradler, E-bikers, mountain bikers and downhillers all find their own corner of heaven here in this Tyrolean holiday region close to Kitzbühel. Many of the summer lifts allow you to bring along your bike, including the Alpenrosenbahn not far from your chalet in Westendorf. Further information about biking opportunities

Golfing Holidays in Brixental

Approximately 900 meters from your chalet in the Kitzbühel Alps, you will discover the 18-hole golf course of the Kitzbühel Alps Westendorf Golf Club. Recipient of the 4-Star Superior Award of the Austrian Golf Course Association, this championship facility is immensely popular, not least because of its peaceful setting. Detailed information about golf courses in the Kitzbühel Alps can be found here.

Our excursion tips

Alpinolino

Right next to the mountain station of the Alpenrosenbahn cable car at 1,770 m above sea level, the whole family turns into detectives of nature. In the discovery park Alpinolino Westendorf, animal riddles and exciting discovery missions are waiting for you. Whether it's the groundhog rally, the squirrel long-jump-competition or the "Spoggolino" ball track – you'll be literally rolled over by adventure opportunities.

After the action-packed detective work, it's time for some rest and relaxation. Only 45 minutes away from Alpinolino, the Kreuzjöchl lake invites you to unwind. The popular hiking trail there offers a fantastic view of the Hohe Tauern, as well as the Kitzbühel and Zillertal Alps.

Hohe Salve

At 1,829 m above sea level, the Hohe Salve not only stands out as the highest point in the SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser Brixental, but also offers an unforgettable panoramic view of the region. The Hopfgarten and Söll cable cars make it possible to reach the summit without much effort.

At the top, enjoy the view of over 70 three-thousand-meter peaks in the rotating panorama restaurant "Umadum-Stuben". Just around the corner is the over 400-year-old "Salvenkirchlein", the highest pilgrimage church in Austria. The popular “Sonnenuhrenweg” leads the way around the summit with 15 sundial stations. The wind harp, meanwhile, invites you to listen to the sounds of the wind.

Schwarzsee Kitzbühel

Kitzbühel not only has the Streif and Hahnenkamm to offer, but also plenty of swim activities for the whole family. The 15 ha Schwarzsee is one of the warmest bathing lakes in Tyrol. Water temperatures of up to 27 degrees are common.

Those who have had enough of swimming can rent a rowing boat or prove stamina and strength at the nearby fitness parkour. Hiking enthusiasts are best off strolling along the “Drei-Seen-Rundwanderweg".

Insider tip: In the early morning hours, the Wilder Kaiser mountain is reflected in the Schwarzsee - a sight worth seeing.

Fortress Kufstein

Once a border town between Bavaria and Tyrol, today a popular host of theatre and concert events: The 800-year-old fortress serves as the backdrop for numerous events and is also the landmark of the Kufstein district.

The fortress casts a spell over visitors both young and old. On a guided tour, you can immerse yourself in the past and learn more about the exciting history of the walls.

The "Heldenorgel" in the Kufstein Fortress is also a special attraction: with 4,948 pipes, it is the largest free organ in the world. Every day the bell chimes in memory of all victims of war and calls for peace.

Tip 5: Wildpark Aurach

At 1,080 m above sea level, 4 km south of Kitzbühel, lies a paradise for animal lovers. With a total of 40 ha, the Aurach Wildlife Park is the largest outdoor enclosure in Tyrol. In the meantime, more than 200 alpine animal species have found their home here. Kangaroos, llamas and Tibetan yaks are also part of the Wildpark family.

In the "Wildspielpark", children are introduced to the animal species that call the Wildpark home with a wide variety of games and riddles. The petting zoo "Streichelstadl" is a highlight, especially for the little visitors. Here, children dare to get close to rabbits, donkeys, goats, llamas and sheep. Afterwards, enjoy Tyrolean delicacies with herbs from the in-house herb garden at the Brandnerhofstube.
