Winter in Pitztal, Tyrol

Skiing holidays on the glacier or on the second-highest mountain in Austria

Great snow conditions you can count on – that applies to the local mountain of Jerzens, the Hochzeiger ski area, as it does the rest of the Pitztal region. Itself at 1100 m above sea level, the town of Jerzens is the ideal base for a magical winter holiday. The 9 lifts and 40 piste kilometers of the Hochzeiger promise a family-friendly day of skiing. Thanks to elevations between 1450 and 2450 m, the Hochzeiger is always guaranteed to be a snowy ski area. A 5 km long sled run, a snowpark as well as “Pitzi’s Rules of the Pistes Path” do their part to ensure the youngsters will also be as happy as clams. You are certain to be in seventh heaven on Tyrol’s highest glacier. From September until May, winter sports fans on Pitztal Glacier slice down 40 km of perfectly groomed pistes, with all levels of difficulty represented. Thanks to the lifts of the Wildspitzbahn, you will be able to take advantage of a comfortable and easy ride to the top of the Hinterer Brunnenkogel at 3440 m. Your cup of coffee enjoyed on the free-floating terrace there is merely the icing on the cake. And if that is still not enough for you, you will also find a day of skiing in the Rifflsee family ski area, with its magical winter landscapes, exceptionally rewarding.

Active holidays amid magically snowy landscapes …

Due to its snowy elevations, the opportunities for winter sports fans in Pitztal are virtually limitless. For an added adrenaline rush, we suggest the 6 km long sled run in the Hochzeiger ski area. This floodlit, beautifully maintained run is also highly entertaining after dark.

If you want to push yourself to your absolute limits, you might wish to consider the countless kilometers of cross-country ski trails which crisscross all of Pitztal. The 21.7 km long Valley Trail runs from the small town of Wiese up to the hamlet of Mandarfen at 1743 m. Regardless of whether you prefer classic or “skating” style, the panoramas which flank the trail are quite astonishing.

Winter hiking in the white Kaunergrat Nature Park

For all those who prefer to keep things a little quieter, the Tyrol holiday region promises ample variety. Kaunergrat Nature Park awaits you with numerous marked winter hiking paths for a relaxed, rejuvenating tour through the countryside. Our tip: the Harberrunde begins at the car park next to the nature park center. Leading to the venturous Gacher Blick viewing platform, there are many reasons your pulse will be pounding.

Recommended attractions

Mmmmhm - how it smells! But not only its scent, but also its beneficial effect on us humans is undisputed. Reason enough to dedicate an entire mountain to the stone pine. At the Hochzeiger everything revolves around the "Queen of the Alps": In the "Zirbenpark" there is a lot to discover, especially for families. For example the 12-meter-high stone pine tower with a 16-meter tube slide, a stone pine ball climbing tree and a stone pine ball track. At the stone pine water at the middle station, you can "splash" to your heart's content. Not to forget: the relaxed descent with the unique ZirbenCarts ... The valley station is approx. 7 minutes by car from your apartment in Pitztal Living.

If you want to sniff a bit of city air with so much nature during your Austrian vacation, you should pay Innsbruck a visit. Tyrol's capital is around 68 kilometers from Pitztal Living in Jerzen. Here you can stroll on Marien-Theresien-Straße, through the small boutiques and shops in the old town or admire the “Golden Roof” and the Hofburg. If you want to enjoy a very special view of the Nordkette, it is best to do so from Innsbruck's modern landmark: the ski jump on Bergisel. The famous Swarowski Crystal Worlds are another 20 kilometers from Innsbruck. This magical place is one of Tyrol's most popular excursion destinations and has delighted more than 15 million visitors since it opened in 1995.

Pitztal Glacier

The trip to the Pitztal Glacier is a real experience in itself - just because of the breathtaking views it offers. The whole thing is still topped! While drinking coffee or having breakfast in “Austria's highest coffee house” at 3,440 meters. In Café 3.440 you can sip what is probably the “highest latte macchiato” of your life while gazing over the peaks. Including Tyrol's highest peak, the Wildspitze.

Rifflsee Floßfahrt

We have another superlative for you: How about “Europe's highest raft trip” on the Rifflsee? This, in turn, is at 2,232 meters above sea level and is the largest mountain lake in the Ötztal Alps. You can reach the mountain lake from the mountain station of the Riffelseebahn in just five minutes on foot (the valley station in Mandarfen in the rear Pitztal is about 30 minutes by car from your apartment). The raft is powered by an electric motor. A sustainable holiday experience - in every way!

Your Summer Holiday in Tyrol

Hiking Tours

With 380 km of hiking paths extending the length and breadth of Pitztal, you are certain never to get bored. Discover themed paths, exciting summits and clear alpine lakes. This valley’s unique landscapes are guaranteed to leave you with impressions that stay with you forever. Furthermore, the Pitztal Summer Card and the “Pitztal Freizeitpass” both give you great opportunities to enjoy free summer programs and numerous bonus highlights during your holiday.

Pure action and a real adrenaline kick are all part of the Zirbencart Downhill experience. Starting at 2370 m above sea level, you will hurtle some 4 km down the side of the Hochzeiger. Thanks to the gondolas and a double chairlift, the start is comfortable and easy for everyone to reach.

Boundless biking adventures

If you are eager to get in some biking … some 95 km of bike tours are just waiting for you. Pitztal serves up a full spectrum of biking adventures. The “Pitztal Bike Route” is the ideal starting point for many tours. Immensely practical, this main artery wends its way from Imst for 42 km through the valley, all the way to Mittelberg at 1400 m above sea level. If ever you run out of “juice”, you can always resort to the hiking bus, which will also be happy to transport your bicycle.

Trail running for the toughest of the tough

In 2016, Pitztal received the Trailrunning Award. Along our clearly marked trails, you are guaranteed never to lose your bearings. Leading you past mountain lakes, streams and waterfalls, even under the most arduous conditions, you will still have plenty of time to take in the unique landscapes as you negotiate the ridgelines and summits. A little off the forest pathways, even beginners will find routes that are ideally suited.

For all water nymphs and river gods

Relax, unwind, simply dangle your legs – and there’s nowhere better to do just that than the waters of Stillebach. There, the swimming pond and Kneipp facilities for your hands, feet and legs, guarantee refreshment and invigoration even on hot summer days. Pitzpark in Wenns features different water depths suitable for adults and children, along with a play raft and 2 diving platforms. We highly recommend diving into the cool, wet waters of a nearby natural swimming lake, such as the Piller Landschaftsteich.
